Are you feeling like a fraud? Do you feel like you are not good enough or that someone is going to find out that you are a fake? If so, then you may be experiencing imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a term used to describe the feelings of self-doubt and insecurity experienced by many people, often high achievers. It can lead people to question their accomplishments and themselves on an ongoing basis.
While it’s normal to feel some self-doubt from time to time, if these feelings persist and start impacting your daily life then it may be indicative of imposter syndrome. People with imposter syndrome often doubt their abilities and feel like they are not good enough or “fake” in comparison to others. They may also fear being exposed as a fraud or not living up to expectations.
If this sounds familiar, know that you are not alone! Imposter Syndrome affects many people – both men and women – across all industries and age groups. While there is no one solution for overcoming these feelings, there are certain things that can help:
Acknowledge your achievements: It can be helpful to take some time each day (or week)to reflect on your accomplishments – big or small! This will help remind yourself of what YOU have achieved, which can combat the negative thoughts associated with Imposter Syndrome
Talk about it: Sharing your experiences with others who understand what you’re going through can be really helpful in managing imposter syndrome
Seek support: If the negative thoughts associated with Imposter Syndrome become overwhelming, don’t hesitate reach out for help from friends or professionals
Practice self-compassion: Be gentle with yourself when those negative thoughts creep in! Remember that everyone makes mistakes sometimes and give yourself permission to do things imperfectly
Take breaks : Don't try force yourself to always be "on" - allow yourself downtime to recharge
Challenge perfectionism : Perfectionism often fuels the flames of Impostor Syndrome . Challenge any unrealistic standards you may have for yourself
Embrace diversity : Celebrate YOUR uniqueness ! No one else has exactly same experience as you do
Find role models/mentors : Look for people who inspire you and seek their advice
Cultivate a growth mindset : Believing tha tyou CAN improve over time is key ingredient in combating Impostor Syndrome
